Public Preview: Azure Backup for PostgreSQL flexible server and elastic cluster (v2)

Azure Backup for PostgreSQL flexible server and elastic cluster (v2) preview brings enterprise-grade long-term retention to PostgreSQL. Backups are taken as physical backups from managed disk snapshots and vaulted in an Azure Backup vault, so protection now extends to servers of up to 32 TB on Premium SSD v1 and up to 64 TB on Premium SSD v2. The first backup is full and every backup after it is incremental, which keeps daily protection practical at multi-terabyte scale, with a recovery point objective goal of one day and retention configurable from 7 days up to 10 years.

The v1 solution took logical backups, which capped server size at 1 TB, allowed a single vaulted backup each week, produced full copies every time, and returned data as files that had to be imported by hand before it could be used. Physical backups lift those constraints together, extend protection to elastic cluster as well as flexible server, and introduce Restore as Server.

The preview includes the following capabilities:

• Backup for both PostgreSQL flexible server and elastic cluster.
• Servers of up to 32 TB on Premium SSD v1 and up to 64 TB on Premium SSD v2.
• Daily and weekly schedules, along with on-demand backups.
• Incremental backups after the first full backup, with a recovery point objective goal of one day.
• Restore as Server onto a pre-created flexible server or elastic cluster, with no intermediate storage account and no manual import.
• Retention up to 10 years with independent daily, weekly, monthly and yearly rules, protected by vault soft delete, immutability, Multi-user authorization and Customer Managed Key encryption.
• Support for WORM immutable backups, so that recovery points cannot be altered or deleted before their retention period expires.

Billing will be enabled from October 15, 2026.
