A security issue in GKE fleet management that could have allowed unauthorized configuration changes to clusters registered to a fleet has been resolved.

This issue has been resolved. You can upgrade your cluster control plane to the following versions to fix the issue for ubuntu_containerd and older cos_containerd node pools:

For GKE Standard CPU node pools, GKE can now upgrade nodes by updating the existing Compute Engine VM in place, instead of deleting the VM and creating a new one. Because the node keeps its underlying VM, it also keeps its compute capacity during the upgrade.
