Public Preview: Automatic OS Image Upgrades for VMSS Flex

Virtual Machine Scale SetsAzure · Compute

Automatic OS Image Upgrades for Virtual Machine Scale Sets (VMSS) using Flexible Orchestration are now in public preview, enabling consistent, fleet-wide OS updates with reduced manual effort. This capability extends automated image upgrades to VMSS Flex, helping customers maintain secure, compliant, and up-to-date infrastructure at scale while lowering operational overhead.

With this release, Azure shifts from per-VM patching to platform-driven, orchestrated updates applied across the entire scale set. Updates are rolled out using health-based progression, ensuring upgrades continue only when instances remain healthy, improving reliability and reducing risk.
