Generally Available: OpenTelemetry Metrics, Visualizations, and Enhanced Monitoring in Azure Monitor for Azure VMs and Arc Servers

OpenTelemetry metrics and visualizations in Azure Monitor are generally available, delivering an enhanced, unified monitoring experience for Azure Virtual Machines and Arc Servers. This release consolidates key monitoring capabilities into a single experience and introduces a simplified onboarding experience, helping customers more efficiently observe, diagnose, and optimize their environments.

Previously, VM monitoring visualizations were powered by metric data from Log Analytics which continues to be fully supported. Customers now also have the option to power these visualizations using OpenTelemetry (OTel) Gues OS metrics, offering a more cost-efficient and performant solution.

With this release, you can:

• Reduce monitoring costs and improve troubleshooting efficiency with faster metric query response times using OTel metrics
• Simplify setup with a unified onboarding experience, including support for selecting existing Data Collection Rules (DCRs)
• Onboard and configure monitoring at scale through the Monitoring Coverage, ARM templates, or Bicep templates
• Enable recommended alerts to accelerate issue detection and reduce configuration overhead
• Leverage Dashboards with Grafana for at-scale visibility and per-process insights across your VM environments
